Overview

This orchestra of international quality can often be found playing mesmerising music at the Michael Fowler Centre or the Town Hall. Premier conductors like Matthias Bamert and other renowned guests guide the orchestra though the works of Mozart, Beethoven, Rachmaninov and many others. Young musicians learn their craft here and often, like pianist Michael Houstoun, move onto the international stage.

I have very fond memories of having sat in the control room on Sunday nites with the engineer Bob Bothamely watching & listening to the broadcast of the symphony orchestra at 2YA. I was a USNavy hospital corpsman stationed with the US Marines at Pohatoanue (?)(spelling). This was my introduction to classical symphonic music and I still like it today even though I am in my 80's. The New Zealand people are great, warm hearted, good fellowship. I remember steak & eggs with fresh bread, butter, tomatoes, and all the fresh milk one wanted all for 2 shillings 6 pence (41cents US)at one of the good resturants there in downtown Wellington. Please accept this note as a heart felt thank you. M W Black
