Overview
The Karori Wildlife Sanctuary is an ambitious 250 hectare project intended to restore and protect native flora and fauna within the city environment. A ground-breaking fence to deter predators has been especially designed and constructed and a weka breeding program is well established. Kiwis were recently released in the area, and visitors can also catch a glimpse of the famous tuataras that are native only to New Zealand. The secluded inner city valley will eventually incorporate educational facilities and a network of tracks. A must when visiting New Zealand's capital city! The visiting hours vary seasonally, for specific timings check the website or call ahead.Open Hours
Mo to Su from 10:00 AM to 05:00 PMKarori Wildlife Sanctuary was fantastic! The vision of restoring the forest and wildlife that sadly were exterminated from the main islands of New Zealand is mind-boggling. So far they've made a great start - we saw tuatara, kaka and many other special native wildlife. We couldn't do the night tour but we hear it's fabulous.
No value for the money. I expected a lot to see, i only get to know what i should see if tehe conditions would be perfect. Meet other people with the same feeling. I have seen s lot more native bird around the country for free. Keep Your Eyes open and don
Great bush walks and plenty of information about birds and trees and the history of the area. You see and hear native birds not now found anywhere else on the mainland of New Zealand like saddleback and hihi. On a night walk you can hear kiwi and see glow worms, and star gaze on clear nights
Loved it - if you like walking, you will love this! Great places to stop and picnic - BRING FOOD AND WATER!!
