Overview

Peanut Island, located just north of Palm Beach, is known locally for both its ties with John F. Kennedy and its use during the cold war as a old Coast Guard station and bomb shelter. Several government and environmental agencies are working to restore the island, which can be visited by taking a ferry from the Riviera Beach Marina.

Peanut Island is THE place to be in the summer time here in Sunny Florida. I have been going there regularly since 1997. If you like the sun, beautiful waters, and good times, then you'll love Peanut Island! You can take your boat and anchor out there or just beach it on the island for free. Campers can stay overnight and as a benefit get the use of a boat sliop overnight. Marine life is plentiful, and don't forget, there's always a good party going on every weekend with the local boaters who tie up together and listen to tunes and have good times! Life is too short not to check out Peanut Island!!!

A day of fun at Peanut Islandby Yahoo | 2005-08-14 15:23:16 |

Great day trip! To get there you either have to kayak over from one of the nearby boat launches or take a ferry over. 2 seperate ferry companies are located at the Riveria Municipal Marina off of 13th avenue. Round trip is $7.00. It's important to remember that the water is only clear 2 hours prior to high tide to about 1 hr after. If you come at any other time the water is dark. If you do get there during low tide you can have fun walking out onto the sand bar that goes almost all the way to the Blue Herron Bridge. If you come during "blue water" to snorkel you can expect to see such things as cowfish, parrotfish, sting rays, manatees, rock beauties, angelfish and a ton of other beautiful fish and sealife. It can be a bit crowded on the weekend and I prefer to go on a monday or tuesday morning. The snorkel area is guarded until 5pm but there are several other spots that are great to snorkel in as long as you bring a buddy and have a dive flag. To find out when high tide is you can visit www.saltwatertides.com. Click on Atlantic Coast link and look for the Port of Palm Beach link. A note on the ferry service: I have used both services and by a long shot prefer Captain Joe's water taxi. He is very knowledgeable and friendly and will come and pick you up whenever you want. He is also willing to stay late if you want to get in a bit of snorkling in late in the day. He gives you a card with his cell # on it and even if you want to come early in the morning before he normally opens at 9 just call the day before and he'll make a special trip out for you. One more thing to remember is to bring some food. There are water fountains on Peanut Island but no food service. Snorkling can work up quite an appetite!! Don't forget your sunscreen! Rachel
