Overview
Founded in 1904, the Assiniboine Park Zoo has a long history of breeding endangered species including Siberian Tigers and Golden Eagles. There are 1200 animals of 275 different species making this one of the largest zoos in Canada. Mainstays include the Discovery Center, an indoor learning park, and a petting zoo. Winter travelers can look forward to the Lights of the Wild display around Christmas time. This is one of the attractions, which you can't afford to miss.
I liked that my child was able to see an assortment of different animals. The monkeys are fantastic! The Australian exhibit had a beautiful display of birds. I wish that there was a longer cage for the larger cats to go for a run back and forth as they always look bored sleeping, they need to stretch their legs too & there is obviously room, stretches of land. That would be something to see, cats in action running. Great inside and outside areas. The admisstion rates are reasonable and you can always leave a donation.
Not worth the money! Most of the 'cages' were empty. If some enclosures are not up to provincial standards, why are they still open? If the majority of visitors are children, why aren't more washrooms available throughout the area??? Big disappointment. I apologize to out-of-towners who pay to see so little. It surely IS NOT one of Winnipeg's finest offerings!
They've very recently proposed some serious changes for the zoo, including the polar bear exhibit, and THANK GOD no condos on the park property. I do believe the zoo is in need of some restoration and upgrading however. The entrance fees are too low and should be higher to pay for an upgraded and more exciting product. The problem is however, the average Winnipegger won't pay much to see a world class facility. I've heard whackos say the zoo should be FREE! Why pay $8.00 - 10.00 to enjoy an amazing zoo and have a wonderful experience when you can take that same amount and almost buy a 6-pack or gamble it in the casino??? THAT'S the thinking. I live here so I CAN say it. Truth hurts. And it's a shame. If you want a facility that visitors will thrill to come back to, you HAVE to pay for it. It's simple, but unfortunately a lost concept on the average Winnipegger.
Winnipeg has one of the best animal exhibits. The animals seem happy and very well taken care of. The train ride is another thing that attracts the kids. However I do believe it is time the park upgrades its playgound located by the pavilion. Come on now that playgound is old as the hills it hasnt changed since i was a kid and that is some time ago now. I think families would come out with their kids if there was more things in the park for the kids to do.
The Winnipeg Zoo has a great reputation around the country and even the world because of its low price and great exhibits. Avoid peak sunshine hours and go early spring to see babies! Did you notice the only negative comments came from Winnipeg writers? It's another typical example of Winnipeggers shooting themselves in the foot. Have any of these critical reviewers been to a zoo in any other city? All zoos smell; they contain animals.
The zoo is awesome so wat it smells bad every zoo does because animals live there obviously there'd be some stank and the boo at the zoo is lame i got bored there was a 30 minute line and u could easily get lost and u cant see any animals (but 1 bear) but other than all that THE MONKEYS AND THE TIGERS RULE
There was alot of animal in their hut so i didnt see any of the monkeys :( also i felt really gross when i went their also i really didnt know where i was walking the signs should be more clear
loved every min of it the best trip evea the best best best best best best best best best best best trip i have ever had i love animals
we like this zoo because, there is so many interesting animals.you can even ride a horse for $2.00.my faerute animal is the snow tiger.they also have a petting zoo right by the front door.i aways go and get ice cream or a popcycle when i.m just about to leave.i thought it was cool that they even have a reptile excibet where you can see a snakeor turtle.
The zoo hasn't changed since I was like 10 years old. The only thing changed was the cheetahs( only for the summer) and the white bison. The cheetah exhibit was an old exhibit that use to hold panda back then in the 80's but in a sad sorta way ( the cheetahs don't get a lot of privacy . Its kinda sad animals live in this zoo. Some exhibits are quite small, and smell so awful. The nastiest places was the native bird house, it really stank! It had changed like new murals and lighting for the tropical house and the discovery centre. The some of the exhibits have new signs which is an improvement. Barriers are either too small or just a chain between the animals and visitors which can very dangerous. It had previous plans to renovate the zoo, but the city won't budge. And it has been that again and again. Its a good zoo to go to for the family or friends. I recommend 45 min or 1 hr. If you like animals, its good to visit (even if some of the animals look kinda sad). But I hope you don't mind the smell.
